What is a brand kit and why do I need one?

Sound the alarm, mint & poppy is growing! We are going to be adding a couple new services to our business (and tweaking a few current ones) to offer branding kits and really focus on the initial design stage of a business.

You might be asking yourself ‘what the heck is a brand kit and why do I need it?’ and that’s okay – because we’re here to give you the low down.

With mint & poppy being a little over a year old, we’ve had some time to reflect on the work we’ve done and we finally feel like we’re at that stage where our head is above water and we’re working with brands we really align with (yay!).

But one thing we’ve noticed whether it’s working with our clients or meeting up for countless coffee dates with local #bossbabes, is that a key piece of the puzzle is missing – and that is a brand kit. Which, when we think about it – makes sense… when someone has an idea to start a business – they start based off the idea that they have whether that’s a product or service and over time, the brand eventually develops. But this usually results in a ‘fly by the seat of your pants’ mentality and having those ‘what am I doing’ moments trying to align your business to your brand to the message you’re trying to convey.

Without a clear brand identity, we often have trouble aligning the business to the right target market and don’t see the results we thought we would in terms of product sales, traffic, visibility or whatever it may look like to you.

Okay let’s get to the point… WHAT IS A BRAND KIT?!

The Coles notes: In most cases, it’s a short (usually a one pager), easy to read guide of your brands identity. It’s a quick reference sheet of your brands logos which include primary logos, secondary logos and sometimes Favicons and Submarks. It also includes your brands colour palette (usually 5 colours), font and the specific typography used on your website or marketing materials. Lastly, a mood board which includes inspo pictures that represent the look, tone, and feel of your brand (or what you want it to look like).

Now that you know what it is, I’m sure you’re asking yourself “do I really need this?” and the answer is YES, yes you do.

So let us tell you why…

1. Having a brand kit is essentially your brands identity – it’s WHO your business is. If someone were to look at your brand kit, even just briefly, they should have a pretty good idea of your businesses personality. Having a clear brand identity is key to a successful business. It’s used to evoke specific feelings from your audience and it is designed to communicate your brands overall message and your business story.

2. It’s the easiest way to stay consistent. You have your logos, your colours, your font and any other specific aspect of your brand – so going forward when you create a website, social platform or any type of marketing material, THOSE are the elements you are using to create them. This way, your brand is consistent on all channels and your audience will be able to identify your brand no matter where they see it.

3. It keeps things clear! If a brand kit was not designed in the early stages of a business, we often see that entrepreneurs lose track of their brands identity – and the reason for this, is that is was never clearly defined. Stay true to your brand and what you’ve created versus trying to be someone else every other month. It starts to look messy and people don’t resonate with all the identities (or identity crisis) you've created.

We posted on our Instagram that we wanted to work with 3 to 5 local businesses to create a FREE brand kit where we'll be designing each element of the brands identity, in exchange for some honest feedback and a testimonial. We got so many responses and we’re excited to get started.

We will show you the process and the outcomes of these beautiful brand designs we create and if it’s something you feel like you’re missing or want to explore for your business, don’t hesitate to reach out – we’re always up for coffee (or wine) to chat about your business goals!

We’re curious – do you have a branding kit? Let us know!
