10 tips for taking pictures on your iPhone

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve posted a blog – sorry babes, we’ve been navigating this whole pandemic trying to figure out the best way for us to show up and help you all during this time!

First off, we just want to say that we are thinking about all of you right now! It’s such a crazy time and our emotions are all over the place, which is 100% normal. Some days we are filled with productivity and motivation to get all the things done and other days we just are feeling it and we’re lucky if we wash our face. It’s a struggle! But let’s all lean on each other for support – we will get through this together!

OKAY blog time! We wanted to give you some tips and tricks for taking pictures with your Iphone specifically (but most of these can be done with any Smartphone). Since most of us are at home, it can be hard to create content for ourselves or our businesses! Well do not fear, we’re here to give you some tips and also give you some inspo to get the perfect shot!

CAMERA GRID

An easy way to ‘get the shot’ and make sure the subject of your picture is in the frame, you can turn on grid lines on your camera by going to Settings > Camera > Grid (touch to turn on). This is a great way to make sure you are getting a similar shot in all your pictures. It also follows the rule of thirds for taking pictures and making sure your subject crosses through those lines.

DIFFERENT ANGLES

When you’re taking a picture, don’t always aim to take the shot head on – switch up those angles and get creative to get a different perspective. This might mean balancing on a chair to shoot overhead or laying down and shooting from below! You’ll be surprised to see how cool your shots turn out.

AVOID ZOOMING IN

Whenever you can (actually no, at all times) avoid zooming in. This instantly lowers the quality of your picture. Move physically closer to the shot you’re trying to take or try a new spot.

TAKE A LOT OF PICTURES

When you’re taking pictures, snap a bunch – it might be annoying later on to go through them all, but you’ll thank yourself when you have different shots to choose from versus taking one picture and not liking it! Incorporate some slight movement so you can see what works best.

USE A TRIPOD WITH BLUETOOTH REMOTE

You can find some pretty affordable tripods online (Amazon specifically) and it will be a game changer to take some pictures, keep the camera steady and have it at the proper height. If you can find one that also has a Bluetooth remote – even better! The remotes are usually pretty small that you can hide it in your hand as you snap away!

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF NATURAL LIGHT

Use those sunny days to your advantage! Face a window or have the subject of your picture close to the light from the window – it will brighten up your picture and keep it clear. Just watch for shadows depending on what time of day it is!

TAP TO FOCUS

Ever wonder why sometimes your photo looks a bit off – it might be because your Iphone isn’t focusing on the right subject. You can manually tap the screen on what you want it to focus on and a little yellow box will come up. This ensure the lens will focus on what you are wanting the main subject of the photo to be.

BLUR THE BACKGROUND

If you have a newer Iphone, you have a setting called ‘portrait mode’. You can scroll over to this option when you’re in your camera. Once you’ve focused on the subject of the photo, it will blur the background of your shot. It makes for a really great picture!

USE BURST MODE

Burst mode is another option when taking pictures and it essentially takes a burst of photos really quickly. This is especially great for action shots! Try it out next time you’re doing a little twirl and you’ll get to see a bunch of pictures with different angles!

PLAY WITH EXPOSURE

If you’ve taken a picture on your Iphone, you’ve probably noticed the little yellow box with a sunshine beside it. Well, if you’re taking a picture in a really bright area or in a darker setting, you can toggle that little sunshine up and down to brighten an underexposed setting or darken an overexposed setting.

You don’t need a fancy camera to get started taking pictures – most Smartphones have amazing cameras in them to take some great shots, it’s just a matter of playing around with it. If you are struggling to take some pictures during #quarantine, we feel you – but use the space you have and get creative with different angles!

Take some in your kitchen, on your porch, get close up with textures like your bedding or even grab a piece of an old tile sample to do some flat lays. There are so many options to take different styles of pictures at home, without feeling like they are all the same.

What are your go-to Iphone tips for taking great pictures?
